The Church Chase

  • Peterborough, Ontario Canada

Here is a challenge for you so decide how you will like to join the chase. Will you travel "soul-o" or would you rather "congregate" with some other like-minded KCC members?

Choose a particular feature found on/in a church building, then see how many different churches (and include other places of worship if you like) you can locate to obtain photographs of that same feature.  Identifying each location might be useful, and car pooling could be fun. Begin your chase at any one of the local churches

The after chase collection will take place at the coffee shop at Monaghan Rd and Lansdowne St.

Following the picture taking, there is a certain coffee shop close by on Water Street where we can swap stories and show off some images.

  • Ontario Canada

The KCC Members' 5th Anniversary Car Rally is an opportunity for you to focus on driving from point A to point following leading lines if necessary!  You will need to zoom in on the clues and take photos of key subjects along the way.  The staggared start should add to the fun, and pose yet another challenge. A pre-ordered BBQ lunch, served at the Peterborough Zoo's north picnic shelter, will round out the day's activities. The quality of your images will be determined by how focussed you stayed during the rally!

Lang Village Harvest

  • Lang Village

Here is an opportunity to see how food was prepared and put away for a Peterborough winter long before Sobeys and Costco arrived in the area. This is definitely a Canada 150 photo-op!

There should be some low light opportunities and challenges here.  Flash use is probably not the best option!  A higher ISO and a fast lens may be more suitable tools for gathering in the light. You could reap some terrific images!

Then there is the usual KCC followup at the coffee shop, this time found at Ashburnham Rd and Lansdowne St.

What do old movies, and horseless carriages have in common? KCC's members are off on a photoshoot to Kinmount this month (that's a clue) to find out.

The Highland Cinemas will be one point of interest, along with a local transportation  museum (Canada 150 anyone?), and perhaps with enough time left for some waterfall shots.

Lunch is being arranged for 12:30pm at The Riverbank Cookhouse in Minden. Selections from the menu need to be made, and forwarded to Barb by June 30th, so the restaurant can prepare in accommodating our group.

The Art of Walls

KCC members meet at the Louis Street parking lot (immediately to the west of the west wall of the old Post Office building).

There is to be no wallowing around this evening as you scour laneways, under bridges and in back alleys to capture the display of wall art donated by local artists. The evening light will be ever changing, so decisions as to settings for ISO, aperture and shutter speed will have to be determined on the fly (as opposed to the fly on the wall!).   You are shooting in manual mode, right?

Members also enjoy the benefit of an evening "wall-k" around the downtown area on this assignment.

Car pooling is encouraged. The anticipated lunch stop will be planned. We aim to be back in Peterborough mid-evening, the same day.

KCC Enjoys Elvis, Speed and Panhandling

  • Peterborough Speedway

KCC members have the opportunity to practise their image tracking and composition skills as the drivers practise having their picture taken on the speed oval. you may be referred to as "Swivel Hips" for good reason, as you practise your panning motion to the roar of racing engines (not a crowd of your admirers necessarily!). Here is the opportunity to let your inner Elvis "brake" loose, along with the cars as they enter the corners and leave a "hunka hunka burning"  rubber!

We meet at Peterborough Speedway parking lot at the start of the shoot. Members entering the Speedway track area are required to sign a standard waiver first. ** For your own safety, keep your attention on the location of the cars at all times, especially if you are on the infield area of the track. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult!

If you happen to get that "winning" shot, a print of it dropped off at the speedway is always appreciated by the driver and the speedway.

The KCC thanks the Peterborough Speedway for providing this opportunity for our members.

KCC Members "Phlox" to Shoot the Wildlife

  • Wildlife Sanctuary, Trent University

KCC members are to meet at the Wildlife Sanctuary on University Rd., located south of Trent University. Parking is available in the lot on the east side of the road. Enjoy the tranquility of the location, keeping in mind that "phlox" are easily spooked.

Phlox (plants . . . not sheep!) and some pond life can be seen on the west side of the road.  On the east side of the road you may be able to track down swallows. Ornithology note here -  if the swallows have really long, skinny legs and a long bill. . . they are probably herons

A tripod and longer lens will be of advantage for this photo shoot.

Monthly Challenge - for June: "Flight"

How to get a great shot of the many facets of "flight"?

For instance;

One can take a "flight" (somewhere), take "flight" (from something), go up/down a "flight" of stairs, or . . . maybe it could be just a "flight" of fancy!

What idea can you take off with?      Can you rise to the occasion?

Shooting the Blooming Plants

  • Griffins Greenhouses

Ready . . .  Aim . . . Squeeze that camera button very slowly! Better yet, use a remote, or the camera's timer along with your favourite tripod to be rewarded with the sharpest of images. Remember to be very quiet while stalking your quarry, I have read that plant life can hear you coming! Especially corn, they have ears! (sorry)

We will be meeting at Griffins Greenhouses. Many thanks to the owners of this terrific business for their hospitality.

Monthly Outing - "Into the Big Smoke" - Toronto "Kensington Market"

  • Tim Hortons

KCC members are invited to experience an interesting day (and maybe evening) of; travel, adventure, dining, photography and . . . Shopping??

We meet for coffee and car pooling  at Tim Hortons on Crawford Drive for a 9am departure to Whitby, and from there it is the GO Train experience, and onward to Union Station.

Along with our trusty Toronto guide, "Stalwart Stan" who will accompany us upon our arrival in Toronto, we will brave one of the "Big Smoke's" oldest community markets.

There will be the obligatory stop for lunch, of course  (location to be announced) followed by a chance for further photography (and shopping?).

For those who wish to extend their "Big Smoke"visit, you can enjoy dinner and then experiment with some lowlight photography around the "Harbourfront" area. From there it is just a short walk to use your return "Go Train" ticket that will get you back to Whitby.

Be sure to "Market" the date on your calendar!  Meanwhile, you can check out the Kensington Market on Wikipedia. Further details to follow.

Down on the Farm

  • Heritage Farm

KCC has arranged a visit to the Harley Farm, located on Heritage Line (Cty Rd 34 which goes into Keene). This farm is situated  on the west side of Heritage Line, and is just prior to the turn to Lang Village.

The farm specializes in goats, sheep and pigs. There are some one to two month old lambs, and there maybe some piglets available for portraiture photography.  The farm has been featured in two commercials for Subaru Canada.

Arrival time is set for 6:30 pm (please be prompt). We can shoot until 8:00 pm. For insurance reasons we will be assigned a guide who will also inform us about the farm and the livestock.

Please Note:  There will be a $10.00 per person charge by Harley Farms for this opportunity. This is the farm's policy.

You can check out the farm's web site ahead of our visit:  http://www.harleyfarms.ca/

We would suggest that boots would be the ideal footwear and do dress for the weather.

Urban Decay (. . . Another Brick in the Wall)

  • Perry Street and Park Street Peterborough, ON Canada

How does one achieve those haunting images of buildings that were new in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries?  Here is your chance to find out.  We meet first at Perry and Park Streets (across from the Tim Hortons Drivethru). During the evening we can search the area for buildings and architecture that represent an era that has had its heyday and has been left behind.

This is a black and white night, so investigate your camera beforehand to see if it will record in black and white (monochrome). Also you might practise trying to envision how an object would appear in black and white. Concentrate on noticing where shadows and highlights fall and keeping light and dark foremost in mind.

We urge you to respect people's privacy and property of course, please keep to public areas.

Monthly Challenge - May Mini Macro (as opposed to MiniMe)

This month has a teenie tiny topic which could present a very large challenge. Seeing as all types of life is springing forth during the merry month it is an interesting challenge as to how to best capture those itty bitty images of flora, fauna and the other almost microscopic life forms! Or perhaps it is the downsized particle of inanimate matter that holds more interest for you - and - that doesn't move!

You will have to determine how to best utilize your lens, your camera, your tripod . . . your patience . . . to achieve those interesting shots.
